CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — February 22, 2018
Over the past weekend, CCFC coaches Sammy and Sebastian Giraldo receive an invitation to attend the Qualifying 2017-18 Generation Adidas Cup Central Region at Houston Sports Park in Houston, TX.
Sponsored by Adidas, the Generation Adidas Cup is a premier competitive youth soccer tournament held in North America by the Major League Soccer (MLS) for elite youth U-17 academy teams. This program gives young, professional-ready soccer players in the U.S. who are not yet eligible for the MLS early draft, an opportunity to compete with professional foreign clubs without player signing restrictions. CCFC’s head coach, Sammy Giraldo, explains the level of play at Generation Adidas as a “quite impressive” and “develops some of the best talents in the country.”
The Generation Adidas Cup is split into three regions across the country (East, Central, West), in which select MLS youth teams will compete and showcase their player development skills in a total of 6 matches during the regional qualifying rounds. The top two winning groups will then advance to the Champion Division, including competing against top international clubs, where the remaining teams will then compete for the Premiere Division title.
Coach Sammy Giraldo also explains the significance of CCFC’s invite to the Qualifying Generation Adidas Cup invitation by saying, “I think that first it showcases that we have high level coaches and getting this opportunity was really an honor for me and my assistant coach. The second source of significance is that it also raises overall awareness and exposure of soccer development in this country. We really want to stay as connected as possible to youth soccer development and in the future those are the players that will hopefully one day will get to play for CCFC.”
The 2018 Central Region matches began on February 16th at Houston Sports Park and will continue until February 19th after the Houston vs. Chicago match at 1pm.
