Corpus Christi FC returns to the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer Stadium after a positive 2-0 victory on the road in Grand Prairie over Texas United. The Sharks come back to the Coastal Bend to face off with Mississippi Brilla in what is turning out to a must win in the march for the playoffs.
Corpus Christi FC faces off in the return fixture against Mississippi Brilla this Friday, June 21, three weeks after their astonishing 6-3 victory over the Brilla in The Magnolia State. Tremendous goals from Stanley Smith, Gabriel Quesada, Salifu Jatta, Ollie Wright and Noah Wagner capped off CCFC’s biggest season win in the club’s history.
Since this game, both Brilla and the Sharks have been toe-to-toe in the race for the playoffs, making this Friday night showdown a must-win for both sides.
So, just four days after the 2-0 win on the road against Texas United, what else do we need to know in this vitally important game in the Sparkling City by the Sea?
WHO ARE MISSISSIPI BRILLA?
Brilla are one of the elder USL League Two teams, having formed in 2006. Brilla is associated with Brilla Soccer Ministries, an organization which aims to share Christianity through the sport of soccer.
The club formerly competed in the Southeast Division of the USL, which they have won on three occasions. Since their move to the Mid South Division in 2014, they have finished top of the table just once, back in 2015.
Brilla are led by head coach Luke Sanford.
WHAT HAPPENED THIS SEASON AGAINST MISSISSIPI BRILLA?
The Sharks traveled to Mississippi to face the Brilla on May 28, with Dr. Sebastian Giraldo’s men leaving with all three points after CCFC registered their greatest-ever season triumph in the two-year existence of the club.
That game will live on in great fondness for both it’s record-breaking status and how the Sharks managed to bag four goals in seven minutes in the first 45.
HOW HAVE MISSISSIPI FAIRED SO FAR?
Brilla sit top of the table as a result of playing more games than both CCFC and the Cavalry; whilst the Sharks have played eight times, Brilla has stepped out nine times thus far.
Brilla’s table-topping status is a result of six wins, one loss (which came against CCFC) and two ties. However, if Corpus defeat Brilla on Friday and win their game in hand, Giraldo’s men will leapfrog the lads from Mississippi.
Nick Tunic is back from the suspension he picked up against Brazos Valley Cavalry last week, whilst Arthur Rogers has fought back from the injury he picked up in the same game. Checha Cvetanovic is still out through injury.
There are no fresh injury or suspension concerns.
A WORD FROM THE BOSS
“We know we have to treat every game as a must win. Brilla is another team in playoff contention, so we need to beat them to continue towards our objectives.
“They’re going to give us their best performance. They have many talented athletes and are organized well by a knowledgeable coaching staff. We must be at our best and we will be ready.”
