This Friday, Corpus Christi FC begin their second-ever USL League Two season, after finishing fourth in the Mid South Division in 2018. The Sharks will get the ball rolling by facing off against Albion Hurricane FC Royals at the Jack A. Dugan Stadium, three weeks after demolishing FC Thunder 6-0 in a pre-season friendly.
Sebastian Giraldo’s men got off to a flyer in the clash against the Thunder, with one man in particular taking the field by storm – Ollie Wright.
Wright scored a fantastic hat-trick for the Sharks on what was his debut for the club. The newbie, who hails from London, England, spoke to CorpusCFC.com about THAT game, life in Corpus Christi, and looks ahead to what he believes is going to be a magnificent season for the boys on the Coastal Bend.
“It’s been great so far. I have only been here a few days and it’s a good bunch of lads, I’ve really enjoyed it so far. They’ve made me feel at home, coming from St Mary’s as well, it’s different.” said the Englishman.
Wright has settled in tremendously well with the club from St Mary’s University, and – as proven by his hat-trick – has already become a big name within the squad, which comes off the back of scoring four goals in 35 appearances over the past two years for the Rattlers in San Antonio. Now, Ollie believes Corpus Christi FC are onto something special this year.
“The coach has been putting in a philosophy which we’re all adapting to well. I can’t say too much obviously, but we’re really confident now. I know I am good with the ball at my feet and passing, and it’s all working out well.” Ollie told CorpusCFC.com.
Despite his phenomenal debut at the Dugan Soccer Field in April, youngster Wright was taken back by the incredible support from the Sharks fans and knows how important those supporting the team are. The Londoner is hoping for even more support as the season goes on.
“My first game was amazing. It was my first time playing for the club and the first time I have played in front of so many people – 1300 were there! The fans were great. I have never played in front of that many fans, and we know how important they are.”
Last season, Coprus Christi finished fourth in the Mid South Division, but midfielder Wright, along with his teammates and coaches, believe that they can challenge for the conference this year, in what will be just their second campaign as a USL League Two side. The 20-year old stated:
“I know we can win the conference. Other teams say they will but we know we can! We have the best team, best players and we’re constantly getting better.”
Up next for Wright and co. is the season opener against AHFC Royals, Friday, May 17th. If you have not already, be sure to purchase your tickets through the website or at the stadium on game day and get down to support your local team!
